What i ended up doing is adding a stand off about 4 6 inches installed in the vent hole of the gas tank then taking a fairly long roll of gas line hose making a. As long as the top of this hoop is higher than the tank vent you will not get any overflow or fuel smell and the tank will vent properly. If you remove the vent line from the canister you should be able to blow through the line to the tank. Have you looked everywhere and have not been able to find the source.
