Ford only runs with key in start position. If it runs while you hold the key forward on the spring but the starter is not spinning then its a problem inside the steering column. If it loses power when the key is released the ignition switch is bad. Or you may think you have a bad starter relay. Some ford owners encounter a situation where the starter run continuously or keeps running even after the engine has started and even after theyve removed the key from the ignition. I meant for you to monitor the power on the redgreen stripe wire at the ignition switch to see if power shuts off on it when the key is released from the start position. If no short detected continue with step 2. 93 f150 only runs with key in start position. Obviously this is a strain on the starter. So when you are cranking the engine it feeds a pure 12 volts to the coil to fire the motor then when it gets started and you release the key from the start position the ignition terminal on the switch will continue to feed voltage to the coil to keep the motor running.

Steve go outside to one of your running trucks that is simular to this one remove the nut on the on the starter relay or the thing that looks like a fender mounted solenoid and put all the wires except the battery positive on the other side of the relay install the wires that way then try to start the vehicle. If voltage is present locate and repair short.
If it doesnt then you have a wiring issue that is very odd for sure. I had a civic that had the exact same problem it would only run if you held the key in the start position or just a little less than the start position let it go to the on position and it would quit on me. At first this may make you think the starter drive is binding. 550 in repairs same problem drat. Does having the key in start bypass the mass air sensor or other sensor that kicks back in when key is released to run position. I had the ignition switch changed still same problem just intermittent now maybe was intermittent before who knows.
Im thinking 56 12 volt chevy was there in55 if you have your truck run only when in the crank position you need to check your wiring on the back of the switch it sounds like its connected. I replaced the ignition switch and never had any more trouble.
